Andrew Bowie MP supports Green Freeport status for North East.
Following his successful campaign to increase the standing of Scottish wind energy, Andrew Bowie MP is now calling for The Port of Aberdeen to receive the Freeport status. This comes after Andrew met with the CEO of the local port.
After meeting with CEO Bob Sanguinetti last Monday, Andrew is fully supportive of the cause. He is thrilled about the prospect of around 30 000 new jobs being created, and he appreciates the boost which this would give the area and its economy.
Andrew said:
“It is vital that this plan is progressed, not only for the best of the City of Aberdeen, but also for the surrounding Shire. I will continue to push this agenda forward in every way I can, so we can proudly call Aberdeen a Freeport.”
With a stark difference between the British Government and the Scottish equivalent surrounding the Freeport status, Andrew was disappointed in the indecisiveness of Holyrood. With the British Government already having announced eight Freeports and their future location, the Scottish Government has, through their inaction, stalled the decisions and hindered the progress.
But Andrew does insist the plans for Scottish Freeports, and especially one to be in Aberdeenshire, is an ambitious and necessary bid to secure future commerce for the Northeast. Viewing the situation as such, Andrew will further support the plans both locally and in Westminster.
Not just an opportunity for trade, the Freeport status would provide the basis for a decarbonised future and a just transition to the Net Zero. This is a matter which Andrew is passionate about and has championed for on many occasions. Andrew has, for example, provided a successful bid which increased and expanding the Scottish wind energy industry. This was done by pushing the target of one Gigawatt by 2030 to five Gigawatts by 2035, following Andrew's relentless campaign for Scottish wind industry to be fully utilised.
Andrew concludes:
“The Freeport and its accompanying benefits will truly be a great opportunity of expansion for our local industry and the communities which are affected by these forces.”
