Local MP Andrew Bowie has urged North East schools and community groups to take part in a nationwide tree-planting campaign marking the Queen’s platinum jubilee.
Every part of the UK has been invited to plant a network of leafy avenues, copses, woodlands or single trees in honour of the monarch’s 70 years of service next June. And three million free saplings will be sent to applicants between now and the end of next year, as part of the Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC) initiative.
West Aberdeenshire and Kincardine MP Mr Bowie said:
“The Queen has personally planted more than 1,500 trees around the globe and has joined naturalists like Sir David Attenborough to underline the importance of enhancing our environment.
“The pandemic has deepened our appreciation of beautiful green spaces and fresh air – one positive after such a difficult year for so many.
“And I can think of no better way to celebrate 70 years of this special reign, and come together as communities across Britain, than to add to our natural surroundings.
“Applications are open now so I would ask local groups and schools to write in ahead of the first plantings planned for this year.”
The planting phase will begin in October and continue to April next year, ahead of the platinum jubilee celebration from June 3. This will be followed by more in October 2022.
The Queen joined project patron the Duke of Rothesay, Prince Charles, for the first Jubilee tree planting at Windsor Castle – a Verdun oak first planted in Britain after the First World War.
